Syrian troops loyal to President Bashar Al-Asad fired point-blank into crowds of mourners at the funeral of assassinated Kurdish opposition leader Meshaal Al-Tammo in the city of Qamishli on Saturday, killing two. The number of mourners attending the funeral cum anti-Asad protest was set at 50,000 by the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights based on eyewitness reports. On Friday, troops opened fire at a funeral in a Damascus suburb, killing one and wounding ten. Eight others were killed in other incidents. Al-Tammo was killed on Friday when gunmen burst into his home firing. His son was wounded in the attack. The Kurdish population, which represents about ten per cent of the Syrian population, was enraged by the killing and are seen as a possible addition to those who have taken up arms against the Al-Asad regime.
