If the Turkish prime minister’s adviser is correct as quoted in a Gaza-based newspaper, a deal in the works could solidify a long-term period of quiet between Israel and Hamas and see the restoration of relations between Turkey and the Jewish state that have been in a shambles for the past five years. Yasin Atkay, who was interviewed in the aftermath of a visit to Turkey by Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal, was quoted as saying that the long negotiations over the 2010 Gaza flotilla incident “is likely to be resolved very soon.” The Israeli daily Haaretz reported that Meshaal and Turkish President Erdogan have met to discuss the creation of a seaport for Gaza and safe passage between Gaza and Cyprus – both conditions Hamas held out for an end to last summer’s 52-day war fought against Israel. Hamas is also in talks with President Al-Sisi to rehabilitate relations between Hamas and Egypt.
