A United States delegation staged a brief walk-out at a meeting in Geneva of the United Nations’ Conference on Disarmament to protest Syria’s assumption of the rotating presidency of the body tasked with eliminating weapons of mass destruction. After returning to the plenum, American Ambassador Robert Wood expressed “outrage at Syria’s actions [and] its blatant disregard for international obligations.… Syria has neither the credibility nor the moral authority to assume the presidency of the…very body that negotiated the chemical weapons convention,” he affirmed. In response, Syrian Ambassador Hussam Edin Aala committed to fulfilling his role “with full transparency and professionalism,” before, somewhat ironically, calling on other countries not to “poison the atmosphere in the forum.” The Orwellian-like development comes just weeks after the Assad regime was again accused of using chemical agents during a successful campaign to retake Eastern Ghouta, a strategic enclave located on the outskirts of Damascus.
