The United States Department of State has placed a number of leading Hamas and Hizbullah operatives on the terrorist blacklist in a move some are reading as being part of President Obama’s effort to reassure Israel that its security needs are receiving maximum consideration by the administration in the aftermath of the Iranian nuclear agreement. A major element of concern about the controversial deal is the vast amounts of money that will be made available to the Iranians as sanctions are lifted that will be used to the benefit of Iranian terrorist proxies such as Hamas and Hizbullah. The new additions to the list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists include the infamous Samir Kuntar, a Hizbullah mass murderer who, upon his release in the 2008 prisoner exchange, became Hizbullah’s most visible spokesman and is involved in building the Hizbullah presence on the Golan Heights; and Mohammed Deif, Hamas’s top warfare strategist. The US designation means all property within US jurisdiction connected to those named is frozen and it’s forbidden to do any form of business with them or to their benefit.
