Violence Returns to Beirut

Several students were killed and dozens were wounded when pro- and anti-Syrian blocs clashed at the Beirut Arab University on Thursday evening. The students hurled rocks and furniture at the rival factions and the army was brought in to restore calm. Leaders of both sides of the political divide appealed to the youngsters to return to their homes. A curfew was imposed overnight. Lebanon could well be heading back towards civil war, two senior Beirut-based academics told The Media Line. The pro-Syrian Hizbullah said it will use all legal means available to bring down the current Lebanese government. Meanwhile, international donors pledged more than $7 billion in aid to Lebanon during a conference in Paris, France on Thursday.
