The University of Hebron is holding its student elections on Monday, despite a mass riot on Sunday which led to at least 12 students being injured, reports the Palestinian daily Al-Ayyam.
Four student organizations are participating in the elections, representing Hamas, Fatah, Islamic Jihad, and a coalition of the left wing parties. Hundreds of followers of the two leading student groups – representing Hamas and Fatah – engaged in a fight which started after both sides accused each other of misconduct during the election campaign.

Some 4,250 students have the right to vote in the elections. The Fatah group is the favorite to win, but Hamas is increasingly gaining power through a wide net of social activities.
These elections are also important to Hamas, as they come only four months prior to the Palestinian Authority’s parliamentary elections. Hamas, for the first time, has announced it will participate in the parliamentary elections.
