US-Israel Tensions Rise Over Potential Sanctions on Orthodox IDF Battalion
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Sunday that he would vigorously oppose any US sanctions against individual Israel Defense Forces (IDF) units accused of human rights violations.
“If anyone thinks they can impose sanctions on a unit of the IDF, I will fight it with all my strength,” the prime minister vowed.
Netanyahu’s remarks were in response to reports that the State Department plans to sanction the Netzah Yehuda Battalion, an ultra-Orthodox combat unit.
The Israeli military said it was “not aware” of the issue in question or of any change to official US policy.
Israeli War Cabinet minister and Netanyahu rival Benny Gantz said on Sunday that he had discussed the issue with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, requesting reconsideration.
The State Department confirmed the discussions, noting Blinken also spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, but did not mention sanctions.
It remains unclear whether Netanyahu and US President Joe Biden have discussed the issue.
News outlet Pro Publica reported that the Israel Leahy Vetting Forum, a State Department panel, had recommended months ago that the US restrict aid to specific Israeli law enforcement and military units over suspected human rights violations, sparking the latest diplomatic crisis between Jerusalem and Washington.
