Iran Denounces US Attack in Syria
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif on Saturday condemned the United States’ recent airstrikes in Syria, calling them an “illegal violation of Syria’s sovereignty” during his meeting with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein. The two diplomats met in Tehran to discuss “regional developments,” including the $6 billion in Iranian funds frozen in Iraq due to US sanctions, which Baghdad promised to unlock. According to several officials in Iraq and Washington, the US attack on Thursday, carried out by two F-15 jets, targeted Iran-backed militia groups near the Syria-Iraq border, killing at least one fighter and injuring a handful of others. It was the first known military action ordered by President Joe Biden since taking office, following weeks of rocket launches by the Shiite militias on US forces and diplomatic compounds in Baghdad.
