Ukrainian First Lady Zelenska’s Historic Visit to Israel Focuses on Humanitarian Aid

Olena Zelenska, the wife of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, landed in Israel on Sunday evening and met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog and his wife Michal in Tel Aviv on Monday morning.

It is the first visit to Israel for Zelenska, who has been meeting world leaders to discuss humanitarian support for Ukraine and to underscore the suffering of Ukrainian civilians since the Russian invasion in February 2022.

Zelenska was hosted for breakfast by Michal Herzog, and the two were later joined by Isaac Herzog.

According to a statement released by the President’s Office, the two women planned to embark on a joint workday focused on “humanitarian issues, with an emphasis on post-trauma treatment for children and teenagers.” Isaac Herzog joined their meeting as a “gesture to the joint effort to relieve the suffering of children in the war and the whole humanitarian effort.”

Zelenska and Michal Herzog were set to begin with a visit to the Safra Children’s Hospital in central Israel, followed by a professional discussion with the Israeli Trauma Coalition and the NATAL trauma care organization, both of which treat people traumatized by war and terrorism.

Zelenska is also expected to visit a number of Ukrainian soldiers being treated in Israeli hospitals. Several dozen Ukrainian soldiers are currently undergoing physical and psychological rehabilitation in Israel.

“I am grateful for the warm welcome and the opportunity to strengthen our cooperation,” Zelenska posted on Telegram.
