Israel Proposes New Cease-fire in Gaza for Hostage Release

Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced on Tuesday Israel’s readiness to initiate another humanitarian cease-fire in the Gaza conflict, contingent on the release of hostages. Speaking to foreign ambassadors, Herzog emphasized Israel’s willingness to extend aid for hostages’ freedom, highlighting Hamas’ responsibility in this matter.

This development follows a high-level meeting in Poland, where David Barnea, chief of Israel’s Mossad, met with William Burns, director of the US Central Intelligence Agency, and Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. The meeting focused on a new potential hostage exchange deal between Israel and Hamas.

The recent cease-fire, mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the US from November 24 to 30, saw Israel and Hamas temporarily halt hostilities. The truce facilitated the exchange of several Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners and allowed humanitarian aid into Gaza. However, military actions resumed on December 1 after the cease-fire’s breakdown.
