Dubai International Airport Announces Record-Breaking Breaking Half-Year Profits

Dubai International Airport (DXB), the world’s busiest airport for international flights, announced on Wednesday that it had received a record-breaking 44.9 million travelers passing through its facilities through the first half of the year.

As the Gulf state has evolved from a layover location to a full-fledged travel destination, those in the aviation industry have long viewed DXB as a strong indicator of the overall health of the passenger airline industry and an overall barometer for the strength of the United Arab Emirates economy.

The airport saw 89.1 million passengers in 2018, its busiest year. Following a deep downturn and then a strong comeback following the pandemic, DXB saw that number surge back from 66 million in 2022 to 86.9 million last year.

Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, predicts that DXB will surpass its previous record and welcome 91.8 million guests in 2024.

“The record-breaking performance in the first half of this year highlights our strategic importance as a global aviation hub,” Griffiths explained. “Dubai is at the forefront of global cities when it comes to attracting talent, businesses, and tourists from around the world, and we are proud to be the gateway to the city.”

To keep up with demand, Dubai plans to move operations to a new $35 billion airport in the country’s south.

Al Maktoum International Airport, which opened in 2010, currently only has two main runways, like DBX, but Emirati officials say it is planned to expand to five, capable of serving 400 aircraft gates.
