Israel Confirms Military Edge Will Continue Despite Saudi F-35 Purchase
Israel has asserted it will retain its military superiority in the Middle East despite plans by the United States to sell F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia. The announcement follows US President Donald Trump’s recent confirmation of the potential sale, which would give Saudi Arabia access to one of the world’s most advanced combat aircraft. Israel remains the only country in the region currently operating F-35 jets.
Shosh Bedrosian, an Israeli government spokesperson, told reporters, “The United States and Israel have a longstanding understanding, which is that Israel maintains the qualitative edge when it comes to its defense. That has been true yesterday, that has been true today, and the prime minister believes that will be true tomorrow and in the future.”

Under US law, Israel is guaranteed a “qualitative military edge” over neighboring countries, a commitment dating back decades to ensure the nation’s security amid regional tensions. Israeli officials stressed that the country’s continued access to advanced US weaponry and technology would preserve this advantage, even as Washington expands arms sales to other Gulf states.
The proposed F-35 sale comes amid broader US efforts to strengthen ties with Saudi Arabia, reflecting the strategic importance of the kingdom in countering Iran’s influence and maintaining stability across the Gulf. While the deal has drawn concern from some in Israel and Washington, officials emphasize that it will be structured to avoid undermining Israel’s long-established defense capabilities.
