Blinken Presses for More Aid to Gaza in Talks with Gantz

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Israeli War Cabinet minister Benny Gantz Tuesday in Washington, with the top US diplomat emphasizing the urgent need for Israel to facilitate increased humanitarian aid to Gaza. The conversation, described as “quite frank” by State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller, highlighted concerns over the restrictions imposed on essential supplies, including flour, by certain Israeli government officials and protesters who have hindered aid deliveries to Gaza.

Amid these discussions, the US is advocating for the opening of an additional border crossing into Gaza to alleviate the dire humanitarian situation. Blinken’s direct engagement with Gantz forms part of broader US efforts to address what Miller termed a “horrific” humanitarian crisis, with the Gaza Strip facing a looming famine. Hospitals, overwhelmed by casualties, now also contend with a growing number of children suffering from starvation.

Moreover, Blinken and Gantz delved into cease-fire negotiations currently underway in Cairo, though specifics of the dialogue were not disclosed. Miller expressed optimism about overcoming barriers to reach a cease-fire agreement, suggesting that the proposal jointly developed by Israel, the US, Qatar, and Egypt presents a viable solution for Hamas’ acceptance.

This proposal includes terms for a 40-day cease-fire, which would facilitate the release of hostages, increase aid to Gaza, and allow displaced families to return home. As the Muslim holy month of Ramadan approaches, efforts intensify to secure a deal, with negotiators from both sides remaining in Cairo amid ongoing discussions.
