EU Parliament Passes Resolution Targeting Iran in the Bloc’s Most Aggressive Punitive Measure to Date

The European Union’s legislature passed a resolution on Thursday formally condemning Iran for its unprecedented massive aerial attack against Israel earlier this month.

Passing handily with 357 votes in favor versus 20 against, the EU Parliament’s resolution reiterates the supranational organization’s commitment to Israeli security and institutes a litany of new punitive measures against the Islamic Republic of Iran for its destabilizing activities.

As of today’s vote, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) will be designated as a terrorist organization, and new sanctions will be levied against the country’s oil and banking industries.

Similarly, the resolution formally acknowledges the regime’s continued violations of UN Resolution 2231 and demands the Islamic Republic adhere to nuclear noncompliance.

The Parliament also officially recognized Iran’s role in spreading chaos and violence throughout the Middle East by continuing to fund, train, and support its network of armed proxies, including Hamas.

Lastly, the resolution calls on Lebanese Hizbullah and, by association, Iran to comply with the parameters laid out by UN Resolution 1701 and remove all the former armed forces from near the Israeli border to the north of the Litani River.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, who alleges Iran is “the biggest danger to regional and global order and peace,” released a statement after the vote, praising the EU decision as a “milestone.”

“We will work to impose crippling sanctions on Iran and curb its aggression. I congratulate the European Parliament for the important and unprecedented declaration today and call on all European leaders to act accordingly,” Katz continued.
