Former Pakistani PM Imran Khan, Wife Bushra Bibi Sentenced to 14 Years in Corruption Case
An Accountability Court in Pakistan on Wednesday handed down a 14-year prison sentence to former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi in the “state gift” case.
This sentence, part of the “state gift” case, also includes a penalty of PKR 787 million (around $2.81 million) and a 10-year ban from holding any public office.
On Tuesday, Khan and his foreign minister, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, were sentenced to 10 years in prison, for violation of state secrets in the cipher case.
According to sources, Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi was not present in the court at the time of the decision. As soon as she learned of the decision, she drove to Adiala Jail, where her husband is incarcerated, and where the Ladies’ Police formally detained her.
The court’s decision, delivered by Judge Muhammad Basheer, came after the National Accountability Bureau filed a reference against the couple.
The speaker of the National Assembly filed a similar reference against Khan in the Election Commission. The District Court of Islamabad subsequently sentenced the former prime minister to three years in prison.
