Hamas Holds Firm on Cease-fire Conditions Amid Ongoing Gaza Negotiations

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh outlined firm conditions for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, including an Israeli withdrawal and other demands, even as recent efforts to secure a peace deal show no signs of progress. Despite mediation attempts, including Israeli officials’ visit to Egypt, there remains a deadlock in negotiations, particularly over the displacement issue and prisoner exchanges.

Haniyeh’s demands, articulated during a televised speech on Al-Quds Day, encompass a comprehensive cease-fire, a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the return of displaced persons, access to aid, reconstruction efforts, lifting the blockade, and a significant prisoner exchange deal. This exchange would involve the release of Palestinian prisoners in return for Israeli hostages held by Hamas since their assault on Israel on October 7.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has signaled intentions for a military push into Rafah, reflecting ongoing hostilities and complicating cease-fire negotiations. Discussions, particularly led by Qatari officials, have hit a stalemate mainly over the displacement of Palestinians and the contentious issue of releasing prisoners serving life sentences. The Israeli military, represented by Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Herzi Halevi, emphasized continued operations in Gaza to influence hostage release talks, with 134 hostages still remaining in captivity
