IDF Halts Leave for Combat Troops, Citing Risks After Airstrike on Iranian Officials

Israel’s military announced a halt on leave for all combat units following the recent airstrike in Damascus that resulted in the death of Iranian generals and drew threats of retaliation. This move comes as part of a broader readiness effort in anticipation of possible escalations in violence. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) emphasized the temporary nature of this decision, linking it directly to ongoing situational assessments and the strategic deployment of forces.

In its announcement, the IDF said, “The IDF is at war, and the issue of the deployment of forces is constantly reviewed as needed.” This announcement was accompanied by measures to strengthen Israel’s aerial defenses, including the draft of reservists reported on Wednesday. Additional signs of heightened security concerns include disruptions to GPS services in Tel Aviv, which many interpret as a defensive tactic against guided missile threats.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant emphasized Israel’s increasing state of readiness earlier on Wednesday, detailing measures being taken in light of threats from various factions across the Middle East. “We are expanding our operations against Hizbullah, against other bodies that threaten us,” Gallant stated. The airstrike, which has led to these precautionary steps by the IDF, resulted in the deaths of two Iranian generals and five military advisers. Although the attack is widely attributed to Israel, official confirmation or denial has not been forthcoming.
