Iran Executes 2 Men on Blasphemy Charges
Mizan, the official news website of Iran’s judiciary, announced Monday the execution of two individuals for blasphemy-related offenses. Yousef Mehrdad and Sadrollah Fazeli Zare were convicted of crimes including blasphemy and insulting Islam, the Prophet Muhammad, and other sacred elements of the religion. The report did not specify the date of the executions.
Mizan further revealed that Mehrdad and Zare were involved in managing numerous online platforms that propagated anti-religious sentiments, particularly aimed at denigrating Islam, promoting atheism, and engaging in acts of sacrilege.
UN experts have previously urged Iran, a predominantly Shi’ite Muslim nation, to cease the persecution and mistreatment of religious minorities. They have highlighted Iran’s tendency to target dissenting beliefs and religious practices, including those of Christian converts and atheists.
