Iran Proposes Emergency OIC Meeting Over Quran Burning Incident in Sweden
In response to a recent incident in Sweden involving the burning of the Muslim holy book, the Quran, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian proposed an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The proposal was made on Friday, during a phone call with OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha, according to a statement on the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s website.
Amir-Abdollahian condemned the incident as an “insulting and provocative move,” and urged for the emergency OIC meeting to be held at the earliest opportunity. He suggested coordinating the meeting alongside the Ministerial Meeting of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement, scheduled in Baku, Azerbaijan, on July 5-6.
In response, Taha said a meeting at the level of ambassadors and permanent representatives of member states is being considered. He assured he will discuss Iran’s proposal with member states, acknowledging Iran’s important role in the OIC.
The act in question occurred during an authorized demonstration in Stockholm, where a Swedish citizen of Iraqi origin reportedly burned a copy of the Quran in front of a mosque, causing global outrage among Muslims. The Iranian Foreign Ministry responded by summoning Sweden’s chargé d’affaires in Tehran to protest the incident.
