Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi Set for Landmark Visit to Pakistan

Pakistan’s Foreign Office confirmed on Sunday that Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi will visit the country from April 22 to April 24.

“This will be the first visit by any head of state to Pakistan after the general elections in February 2024,” the Foreign Office said in a statement.

The Foreign Office described “his upcoming trip as a significant opportunity for both nations to bolster bilateral relations and foster greater cooperation.”

Pakistan’s Foreign Office further said that “President Raisi will be accompanied by his spouse and a high-level delegation, including Iran’s foreign minister, other cabinet members, and a large business delegation.”

“Discussions would also focus on regional and global developments as well as bilateral cooperation to combat terrorism,” the statement added.

Raisi’s visit comes shortly after Iran and Israel exchanged drone and missile strikes, heightening tensions in the already unstable Middle East. Additionally, Pakistan banned a pro-Iranian militia that had been actively involved in Syria.

Pakistan and Iran often disagree on the instability along their shared border, with each side blaming the other for not effectively addressing militancy.

Tensions escalated in January 2024 when both countries conducted air strikes, purportedly targeting suspected militant hideouts within each other’s territories.
