Israel Warns of Hamas Plans for New Cross-Border Attack

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened an emergency security meeting on Monday in response to a report that Hamas may be preparing for a new ground invasion into Israel, Israeli news reported today.

A Channel 12 report, which was approved for publication by the military censor, also states that Hamas has intensified its efforts to target Israeli forces in Gaza and communities near the border.

Defense Minister Israel Katz recently warned residents near Gaza about the ongoing threat. “Hamas has sustained a heavy blow but has not been defeated. There are ongoing efforts for its recovery. Hamas is constantly gearing up to carry out a renewed raid into Israel—similar to October 7,” Katz was quoted as saying.

The report follows concerns raised by opposition lawmakers, including the military’s former chief of staff, Gadi Eisenkot. Members of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee recently wrote that Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) have rebuilt their military strength. According to their assessment, Hamas now has over 25,000 fighters, while PIJ has more than 5,000.

Although the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas officially expired on March 1, Israel has generally held its fire for the past several weeks. In a separate report on Monday, Israel’s public broadcaster cited a military source who said that the weeks of quiet had allowed Hamas “to bolster its military capabilities in preparation for a new round of fighting.”
