Israeli Minister Ron Dermer at Jerusalem Summit: ‘We Have a Once-in-a-Century Moment’

Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer delivered a sweeping address at the Jewish News Syndicate (JNS) International Policy Summit in Jerusalem on Monday, outlining Israel’s goals for victory over Hamas, a new regional order, and a long-term plan to de-radicalize Palestinian society.

Dermer emphasized that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not only spoken about the Iranian nuclear threat for 25 years but has actively worked to delay Tehran’s ambitions. “When the Prime Minister of Israel says he will do whatever it has to do to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, believe me,” he said.

Turning to the war in Gaza, Dermer stressed that Israel seeks not just an end to fighting, but a clear victory. He reaffirmed the cabinet’s three goals set after October 7: dismantling Hamas, ensuring Gaza can never again threaten Israel, and returning all hostages. He rejected calls to prioritize one goal over the others.

Dermer described Israel as nearing the “home stretch” of a “seven-front war,” praising the resilience of Israel’s citizens and soldiers. He predicted that within a year, Israel will have achieved victory, setting the stage for expanded peace agreements in the region.

Addressing the future of Gaza and the West Bank, Dermer argued that defeating Hamas must be followed by a serious effort at de-radicalization, drawing historical parallels to post-World War II transformations in Germany and Japan. “We have a once-in-a-century moment,” he said. “We have to do it for our children and for our grandchildren.”

Dermer also warned against complacency, noting that over 85% of Palestinians in the West Bank supported the October 7 attack, and stressed the need for systemic cultural and educational change.
