Israeli Traffic Accident Fatalities Decline 4% in 2022

The number of people killed in traffic accidents in Israel last year declined by 3.6% compared to the previous year, according to a report released by Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) on Monday. In 2022, 351 people were killed on Israel’s roads, 13 fewer than in 2021.

However, the number of people seriously injured in traffic accidents rose 2.1%, from 2,458 in 2021 to 2,510 in 2022. The number of accidents with serious injuries but without fatalities also rose 1%, from 2,208 to 2,230, the CBS report added.

Overall, the number of people killed or injured in road accidents in Israel was 18,213 in 2022, 10% fewer than the previous year. But the number killed or injured in electric scooter accidents rose by 10% from 2021 to 2022, according to the report.

Traffic accident fatalities and injuries in Israel are significantly lower compared to other countries in the Middle East and North Africa region. According to data from the World Health Organization, Israel has a much lower rate of traffic fatalities per 100,000 population compared to other MENA countries such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. However, the traffic fatality rate in Israel is higher than the average rate for Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development countries. In 2018, the WHO reported a traffic fatality rate in Israel of 5.4 deaths per 100,000 population. The average rate for OECD countries in 2020 was about 3.5 deaths per 100,000 population.
