Jordanian Foreign Minister Condemns Dutch Lawmaker’s Racist Remarks

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi has publicly condemned the “racist remarks” made by Geert Wilders, a Dutch far-right lawmaker and leader of the Party for Freedom, who recently suggested resolving the Palestinian issue at Jordan’s expense. During a phone call with his Dutch counterpart Hanke Bruins Slot, Safadi criticized Wilders’ comments for undermining the Palestinians’ right to their own state and territory, as stated in a release from the Jordanian Foreign Ministry.

In response, Slot reaffirmed the Netherlands’ commitment to the two-state solution as the path to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and achieving lasting peace. She also emphasized the Dutch parliament’s overwhelming support for this approach.

The two ministers are scheduled for further discussions on the sidelines of an upcoming Union for the Mediterranean meeting in Barcelona. Despite Wilders’ party winning 37 seats—a plurality—in the 150-seat House of Representatives in the Netherlands’ recent elections, the Jordanian foreign minister said his potential to form a government remains uncertain due to the refusal of many Dutch parties to collaborate with him.
