Martin Indyk, Former US Ambassador to Israel and Middle East Envoy, Dies at 73
Former United States Ambassador to Israel, Martin Indyk, has passed away at the age of 73, as confirmed by The Washington Institute. Indyk, renowned for his pivotal role in Middle East diplomacy, notably served as the US envoy to Israel during two critical periods from 1995 to 1997 and again from 2000 to 2001. He was also instrumental as the Obama administration’s special Middle East envoy from 2013 to 2014, although his efforts to rejuvenate the peace process did not culminate in success.
Beyond his official capacities, Indyk was the founding executive director of The Washington Institute, significantly shaping the think tank’s direction and influence on US Middle East policy. In recent times, he was vocally critical of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration, particularly regarding its conduct in the ongoing Gaza conflict and its interactions with the United States.
