Norway, Ireland, Spain To Recognize Palestinian State, Drawing Israeli Condemnation

Norway, Ireland, and Spain announced on Wednesday that they were officially recognizing a Palestinian state, a move celebrated by Palestinians and condemned by Israel. In response, Israel recalled its ambassadors from Norway and Ireland.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre declared that Norway would officially recognize a Palestinian state on May 28, stating, “There cannot be peace in the Middle East if there is no recognition.” He emphasized that this recognition supports the Arab peace plan.

This decision aligns with several European Union countries that have recently indicated plans to recognize Palestinian statehood, advocating for a two-state solution as essential for lasting peace. While Norway is not an EU member, it often mirrors the union’s moves and has long supported a two-state solution.

Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris also announced recognition of a Palestinian state, calling it a “historic and important day for Ireland and for Palestine.” He noted the coordination with Spain and Norway and hoped other countries would follow suit.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez echoed these sentiments, announcing that Spain would recognize a Palestinian state on May 28. Sánchez, addressing the nation’s parliament, emphasized the importance of dignity and hope for Palestinians, while acknowledging potential diplomatic tensions with Israel.

Israel reacted swiftly, with Foreign Minister Israel Katz ordering the immediate return of ambassadors from Ireland and Norway. Katz argued that the recognition could undermine efforts to secure the release of hostages in Gaza and make a cease-fire less likely by “rewarding the jihadists of Hamas and Iran.”

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the recognitions, calling on other countries to follow and affirming that it supports the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and the pursuit of a two-state solution.
