Palestinian Authority Government Set To Resign, New Technocratic Leadership on the Horizon: Report
The Palestinian Authority (PA) government, led by Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh, is reportedly on the verge of resignation, setting the stage for the formation of a new technocratic government within the coming days. According to early reports from Sky News Arabic, sources close to the Palestinian leadership have indicated that this significant political shift could occur as early as the next two days.
This anticipated move is aimed at facilitating the establishment of a new professional technocratic administration by the end of the week, a development that has gained momentum following recent approvals from Hamas. The proposed technocratic government’s mission will focus on the reconstruction of Gaza and the restoration of security in the region in the aftermath of the recent Israel-Hamas conflict.
Hamas has expressed its willingness to support the formation of a government that operates independently of any Palestinian political factions. This new administration, led by nonpartisan professionals, is expected to govern during an initial transitional period until elections can be organized.
Furthermore, discussions held by Hamas representatives in Cairo two months ago have fueled speculation about Hamas’ potential inclusion in the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), contingent upon the establishment of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders. These talks have also explored the possibility of sidelining Mahmoud Abbas from Palestinian politics and the establishment of a PA government comprised of technocrats.
The developments come as reports from The Washington Post suggest that the United States and other Arab states are formulating a plan to establish a Palestinian state. Proposals of a Palestinian state have been met with resistance by Israel, with an overwhelming majority of Knesset members rejecting the recognition of a unilateral Palestinian state in a recent parliamentary vote.
