Police Stop Courthouse Attack in Istanbul, Kill 2 Assailants
An attempted terror attack outside an Istanbul courthouse on Tuesday left six wounded, including three police officers, after a shootout resulted in the death of two assailants. The attackers, identified as a man and a woman, engaged in gunfire with police at a checkpoint near the Çağlayan Courthouse around 11:46 a.m. local time. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, in a statement on the social media platform X, attributed the attack to the Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front (DHKP-C), a Marxist–Leninist group designated a terrorist organization by Turkey, Japan, the US, UK, and EU. The assailants, referred to only by their initials E.Y. and P.B., were pronounced dead at the scene. Following the incident, a significant police force was deployed, securing the courthouse perimeter and initiating an immediate lockdown. Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç announced that prosecutors are investigating the attack. This incident follows a recent attack by Islamic State gunmen at an Istanbul church.
