Turkey’s Erdogan Supports Hamas, Calls It a ‘Liberation Group’
In a notable divergence from most NATO allies and the European Union, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Wednesday that Hamas was a “liberation group waging a battle to protect its land” rather than a terrorist organization. Speaking to his ruling AK Party, Erdoğan used the term “mujahideen” to describe Hamas, emphasizing its role in defending Palestinian lands and people. While Ankara condemned the killing of civilians in southern Israel due to Hamas’ actions, it also criticized Israel’s military response in Gaza.
Erdoğan slammed Western powers for their support of Israel’s actions and called for an immediate cease-fire and unhindered humanitarian aid in Gaza. “The perpetrators of the massacre are those providing unlimited support for Israel,” he said.
These comments drew sharp criticism from Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, who labeled Erdoğan’s remarks “grave and disgusting.”
The Turkish president also announced the suspension of efforts to normalize ties with Israel, accusing it of exploiting Turkey’s “good intentions,” and canceled a previously planned visit to the Jewish state. The announcement has particular significance as Turkey had been focusing on energy cooperation with Israel as an avenue to mend strained relations.
