UK, France, Canada Threaten Action as Israel Presses On With Gaza Operation

Leaders of the United Kingdom, France, and Canada on Monday issued a strong warning to Israel to immediately halt its renewed military operations in Gaza and allow full humanitarian access to the enclave, threatening sanctions and other measures if the situation does not improve. The coordinated statement follows Israel’s limited reopening of aid routes after weeks of global pressure over worsening conditions in the enclave.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu authorized the partial resumption of humanitarian aid on Sunday, following mounting international concern, including from allies such as the US. The UN and aid agencies have warned Gaza is on the verge of famine, with hundreds of trucks of food and supplies stalled outside the Strip. Five trucks entered Gaza on Monday for the first time since March 1.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu vowed to expand military operations under a new campaign dubbed “Gideon’s Chariots,” pledging Israel would control all of Gaza. Fighting in the strip has been intense in recent days, with Hamas-run authorities in Gaza reporting that 91 Palestinians were killed on Monday alone.

The UK, France, and Canada rejected what they called “abhorrent language” from Israeli officials suggesting forced displacement of Palestinians and criticized plans for long-term control of Gaza. “The Israeli government’s denial of essential humanitarian assistance … is unacceptable and risks breaching international humanitarian law,” their statement read.

They reaffirmed support for a ceasefire and called for the immediate release of all hostages. They also voiced support for a two-state solution and warned Israel against further settlement expansion in the West Bank.
