UN Chief Calls for Ramadan Cease-fires in Gaza and Sudan
UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for cease-fires in both Gaza and Sudan on Monday, coinciding with the beginning of Ramadan, a month dedicated to peace, reconciliation, and solidarity among Muslims worldwide. Guterres highlighted the ongoing violence in these regions, marking an unparalleled level of civilian suffering during his tenure as UN secretary-general, which began on January 1, 2017.
“My strongest appeal today is to honor the spirit of Ramadan,” Guterres said, “by silencing the guns—and removing all obstacles to ensure the delivery of lifesaving aid at the speed and massive scale required.”
