US Retaliates Against Iran-Backed Forces for Attacks on American Troops
The US has conducted targeted strikes on facilities used by Iran and its proxy forces in Iraq and Syria, responding to over a hundred attacks on American and allied forces since the Israel-Hamas conflict began on October 7. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated that these strikes were against three facilities linked to Kataeb Hizbullah, a group affiliated with Iran, and were a direct response to attacks on US personnel, including a recent drone attack on Erbil Air Base.

US National Security Council (NSC) spokesperson Adrienne Watson confirmed the drone attack wounded three US military personnel, one critically. President Joe Biden, briefed on the attack, directed these strikes in coordination with Austin and other officials. The US emphasizes its commitment to protecting American personnel, vowing to act decisively against continued attacks, the NSC statement said.
The drone attack, claimed by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a faction of the Hashed al-Shaabi coalition integrated into Iraq’s regular forces, reflects the region’s rising tensions. This coalition opposes US support for Israel in the ongoing Gaza conflict, prompting attacks against the roughly 3,400 American troops stationed in Iraq and Syria to combat the Islamic State group’s resurgence.
