US To Impose Sanctions on West Bank Outposts, Extremist Settlers

The Biden Administration is expected to announce new sanctions on two outposts in the West Bank identified as bases for attacks by extremist Israeli settlers against Palestinians, Axios reported, citing three US officials. These sanctions, poised for imposition as early as Thursday, aim to reiterate the US’s stance against not only individuals but also entities that facilitate logistical and financial support for assaults on Palestinians.

Additionally, three Israeli settlers are slated to face new sanctions, marking an escalation in US efforts to curb settler violence in the region. This move follows a February announcement by the administration sanctioning four Israeli individuals for their involvement in such violence, signaling a shift in US policy under President Joe Biden’s leadership.

The State Department has not responded to inquiries about the Axios report. The Biden Administration has previously articulated its stance on Israel’s settlement expansion in the West Bank, deeming it inconsistent with international law—a viewpoint that realigns with traditional US policy after deviations during Donald Trump’s presidency.

Israel has maintained its occupation of the West Bank since the 1967 Middle East war, a territory the Palestinians envision as the heart of a future independent state. The international community largely views the Jewish settlements there as illegal, a position Israel contests, citing historical claims.

Amid the ongoing conflict with Gaza that began in October, Israel has intensified its operations in the West Bank. United Nations data reveals that since October 7, the conflict has resulted in the deaths of at least 358 individuals in the Palestinian territory, including children, while the Gaza toll has surpassed 31,000.
