West Nile Virus Detected in Mosquitos Near Jordanian Border in Israel
Mosquitos carrying the West Nile virus were identified in the Arava region of southeastern Israel, the Environmental Protection and Health ministries said on Wednesday.
The infected insects were found in four villages along Highway 90 near the Jordanian border.
Symptoms of the virus can include but are not limited to headache, high fever, neck stiffness, muscle weakness, fatigue, and joint and muscle pain. In most cases, those infected experience flu-like symptoms and recover within a week, but in more serious cases, the mosquito-borne disease can result in seizures, paralysis, cognitive impairment, and even death.
The Environmental Protection Ministry called on local authorities to be on high alert and, if needed, “immediately carry out preventative measures and pest control.” Israelis have been instructed to take preventative measures such as reducing dry stagnant water and closing window screens.
