10 Killed, Dozens Injured in Collapse of 10-Story Building in Iran

At least ten people were killed and dozens injured when a 10-story building collapsed in southwestern Iran on Monday. The building collapsed on a busy commercial street in the city of Abadan. Rescue crews worked throughout the night to pull dozens of people from the rubble. The cause of the collapse is under investigation. The Metropol building’s owner and contractor have both been arrested, according to reports. The semiofficial Tasnim news agency reported on Tuesday that a total of 10 people were arrested, including the city’s mayor, Hossein Hamidpour. Construction on the building had not yet been completed at the time of the collapse. The lower floors were opened while work continued on the upper floors. Following the collapse, local residents demonstrated in front of the municipality over what they angrily said was faulty construction.
