Abbas in Moscow To Discuss Gaza Crisis, Calls Haniyeh Assassination a ‘Cowardly Act’

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has condemned the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, calling it a “cowardly act” aimed at prolonging the Gaza conflict. In an interview with Russia’s state news agency RIA, Abbas accused Israel of trying to extend the war and disrupt ongoing negotiations to end the aggression.

Haniyeh, who was the political leader of Hamas, was killed in Tehran last week, an attack Iran has blamed on Israel, vowing to retaliate. Abbas is scheduled to visit Moscow August 12-14 to discuss the regional crisis with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The visit is expected to focus on the peace process and the coordination of positions between the Palestinian Authority and Russia.

Abbas also criticized Israeli plans for temporary solutions in Gaza, emphasizing the need for the Strip to be transferred to legitimate Palestinian control. Russia, which has strong ties with both Iran and key Arab leaders, has condemned Haniyeh’s killing and called for stability in the region. The Palestinian president’s visit to Moscow is part of a broader effort to strengthen bilateral relations and seek support in the ongoing conflict.

Abbas is also expected to visit Turkey following his talks in Russia as regional tensions continue to escalate.
