Al-Eryani: Confronting Houthis Is Key to Regional and Global Security

In an exclusive interview with The Media Line, Yemeni Information Minister Moammar al-Eryani praised US President Donald Trump’s renewed military pressure on the Iran-backed Houthi group, describing it as a turning point in Yemen’s long-running conflict. As reported by Felice Friedson and Giorgia Valente, al-Eryani called recent US strikes a “necessary strategic step” to counter Iran’s regional ambitions and restore Yemen’s sovereignty.

Al-Eryani claimed the Houthis—who have controlled much of northern Yemen since 2014—pose a growing threat to international trade and regional security. He warned that Iran views Israel and the US as sequential targets, and asserted that Trump’s policy differs sharply from past administrations that, in his words, allowed Iranian proxies to expand unchecked.

The interview also addressed the Houthis’ censorship efforts after US airstrikes, growing internal dissent, and their missile threats against Israel, which al-Eryani dismissed as media theatrics. He described the group’s influence as a broader Iranian “terrorist scheme” with global implications.

On the economic front, al-Eryani welcomed new US sanctions targeting Houthi-controlled banks and urged businesses to cut ties with the group. He said restoring Yemen’s financial system is as critical as defeating the Houthis militarily.

As tensions escalate around the Red Sea, al-Eryani said Yemen’s internationally recognized government is preparing to reclaim strategic areas like Sanaa and the port of Al Hudaydah. He reiterated the need for global support to break what he called Iran’s regional stranglehold.

Friedson and Valente’s full report includes further insights on how Yemen’s leadership views regional alliances, international pressure, and shifting public opinion inside Houthi-controlled areas.
