Aleppo Citadel Welcomes Visitors Once More After Earthquake Restoration
Syria’s Culture Ministry has officially reopened the historic Aleppo Citadel to the public after completing vital restoration efforts on damage caused by the significant earthquakes in February 2023. The ministry successfully completed the first and second phases of restoration, focusing on the citadel’s southern tower and entrance, which had suffered from cracks and fissures due to the earthquakes and aftershocks. In collaboration with UNESCO, detailed assessments were made to ensure the structural integrity of the entrance and its supporting pillars. With the initial restoration work now complete, visitors can once again explore the ancient fortress, a testament to Syria’s rich history and resilience. The ministry also announced plans to continue rehabilitating other parts of the citadel, signaling ongoing efforts to preserve this UNESCO World Heritage site for future generations.
