Algeria, Tunisia Initiate Talks To Strengthen Border Region Cooperation

The inaugural session of the bilateral commission focusing on the development and promotion of the Algerian-Tunisian border regions commenced on Monday in Algiers. This meeting marks a significant step in the collaborative efforts of the two North African nations to address shared challenges in their border areas.

Co-chaired by Algerian Interior Minister Brahim Merad and his Tunisian counterpart, Kamel Feki, the session was reported by Algeria’s state-run Radio Algeria to have a strong emphasis on reinforcing border security. Merad highlighted the necessity of securing these regions, with a particular focus on curbing illegal migration. He advocated for a developmental approach, emphasizing the need for increased consultation and coordination between Algeria and Tunisia.

Merad also pointed out that ongoing efforts are concentrated on implementing various programs aimed at fostering development and improving living conditions. These programs are strategically designed to reduce disparities and rectify imbalances in the border regions.

Tunisia’s interior minister, Feki, in his opening remarks, commended the effective security coordination between the two countries. He said the stability and security of both Tunisia and Algeria are closely linked, and that joint actions are underway to enhance border security. This includes measures to counter terrorist threats and fight smuggling networks.

Established in October 2023, the bilateral commission is a pivotal initiative to enhance collaboration and establish a partnership framework between Algeria and Tunisia.
