Arab League Hails Yemen Agreement as Positive Step Toward Lasting Peace
Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit welcomed a new agreement between Yemen’s warring parties, describing it as a “positive step” toward peace. The accord, which includes a cease-fire, was announced on Monday, offering a fresh opportunity to address the aspirations of the Yemeni people and to initiate an inter-Yemeni political dialogue for lasting peace.
Aboul-Gheit emphasized the need to focus on Yemen’s humanitarian crises and to prevent security threats from spreading to neighboring countries. He urged all Yemeni factions to exercise restraint to ensure the success of the agreement, which aims to tackle the serious challenges facing Yemen and the broader region.

The development follows an announcement by the UN special envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, on Saturday. Grundberg revealed that the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council and the Houthi group have committed to a nationwide cease-fire, lifting economic restrictions, and engaging in preparations for inclusive UN-led political negotiations.
Yemen has been mired in a brutal civil war since 2014, pitting the Houthis against the internationally-recognized government. In 2015, a Saudi Arabia-led coalition intervened to support the Yemeni government, further intensifying the conflict.
