DP World Plans Significant Expansion of Container Handling Capacity by Year-End

Dubai-based DP World, one of the globe’s leading port operators, announced plans to bolster its container handling capacity by roughly 3 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) by year’s end, according to the official Emirati news agency WAM. DP World handles around 9% of the world’s total containers; this expansion will increase its capacity to 93.6 million TEUs, positioning the company to accommodate heightened demand in major trade markets.

With global container throughput anticipated to reach 932 million TEUs by 2025, as projected by independent maritime consultancy Drewry, DP World’s growth strategy arrives amid rising concerns over geopolitical uncertainties and the resulting demand for faster, more resilient supply chains.

DP World’s chairman and chief executive, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, commented on the expansion: “This move underscores our commitment as a key player in global supply chain solutions, fostering connections between economies, businesses, and consumers worldwide.”

The company will also zero in on digitalization in its expansion endeavors, adopting contemporary terminal operating systems to expedite trade and enhance efficiency. Furthermore, by incorporating electrically powered automated equipment, DP World envisions a reduction in carbon emissions, steering away from fossil fuels.
