EU’s Borrell Calls Gaza Crisis ‘Human-Made,’ Urges Political Solution
European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell condemned the humanitarian crisis in Gaza during a visit to Egypt’s Rafah border crossing, calling it a “human-made” disaster. He urged a political resolution to the ongoing conflict, which he said began with a Hamas attack last year. Borrell emphasized that humanitarian aid alone would not solve the situation, as only a small number of trucks carrying relief supplies are being allowed into Gaza daily. “One horror cannot justify another horror,” Borrell said, urging for a cease-fire, hostage release, and an end to bombing.
During his visit, Borrell also met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to discuss the regional impact of the Gaza conflict. The Rafah crossing, a crucial entry point for aid and medical evacuations, has been largely closed since May, following Israel’s military takeover of the Palestinian side.
The conflict escalated after Hamas launched a major attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people. In response, Israel has conducted large-scale military operations in Gaza, where local health officials report that around 41,000 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the conflict.
