G7 Threatens Iran With Air Travel Ban Over Missile Transfers to Russia

The G7 nations, including the US, have threatened to impose severe penalties on Iran, such as banning Iran Air flights to Europe, if it proceeds with plans to transfer close-range ballistic missiles to Russia. This stern warning comes amid reports of Tehran supplying Moscow with missiles for use in the Ukraine invasion, raising international alarm. A senior US official underscored the G7’s readiness to respond decisively, emphasizing the united front against Iran’s actions that violate international norms.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken, speaking in Vienna on Friday, said, “On the question of Iranian missiles to Russia for use in Ukraine … we sent very clear messages to Iran not to do it.” Blinken added that “this has been the subject of considerable conversation among a number of countries in Europe and the United States and I think that the concern about that eventuality, and the commitment to address it, if necessary, is very real, and very strong.”

The discussions reflect escalating tensions over Iran’s support for militias and alleged cyberattacks, with the G7 and European Union prepared to take significant measures to prevent the bolstering of Russia’s military capabilities in Ukraine. This development marks a critical moment in international diplomacy, as the world watches how Iran’s potential military support for Russia could further complicate the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
