Gazan Evacuees Struggle With Bureaucracy, Economic Challenges in Cairo

As nearly 100,000 Gazans have evacuated to Cairo and other Nile Valley cities, they face a complex and challenging landscape in Egypt. Karim Adel, a shopkeeper from Khan Yunis, recounted his journey after being injured during intense fighting between Hamas and Israeli soldiers. He was evacuated for medical treatment at Assiut University Medical Center, but only after extensive security checks and family evaluations.

Egypt’s bureaucracy and economic crisis pose significant obstacles for the new arrivals. Without the support of international agencies, the Palestinian Authority is seeking help from local and global nonprofits. Palestinian Ambassador Diab Al-Louh confirmed efforts to secure residency permits for Gazans, allowing them access to essential services and opportunities.

However, Egypt’s restrictions on Gazans, driven by security concerns, make their integration difficult. Critics have also raised concerns about the Hala Agency, which charges high fees for facilitating movement across the Rafah border. Despite these challenges, some local nonprofits, like the Mersal Foundation, are stepping in to provide crucial aid and support.
