Greek, Cypriot Leaders Advocate for EU-Turkey Rapprochement Amid Cyprus Dispute

In a joint press conference held on Monday, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides expressed their support for the burgeoning talks between the European Union and Turkey. Mitsotakis emphasized that the progression of these talks should be both “gradual and reversible.” Both leaders underscored the importance of these discussions in fostering a resolution for the longstanding Cyprus dispute, which resulted from Turkey’s military intervention in 1974. Christodoulides added that Turkey’s willingness to renew peace negotiations per UN Security Council resolutions would be key in establishing a “positive agenda” with the EU. The leaders further showed their readiness to aid Turkey in advancing its relationship with the EU in several sectors, including visa concessions and enhancements of the EU-Turkey customs union. To symbolize unity and support, Christodoulides announced Cyprus’ commitment to fund the reforestation of wildfire-affected areas on Greece’s Rhodes Island.
