Hamas Celebrates as Gaza’s People Struggle for Survival

In his powerful opinion piece, journalist Ahmed Abd al-Salam sheds light on the grim reality in Gaza, where Hamas claims victory while ordinary people continue to suffer. The recent ceasefire, which lasted nearly 50 days, failed to bring relief, as destruction, poverty, and hopelessness remain widespread. While Hamas celebrates, thousands of bodies are still buried under rubble, and everyday life has become nearly unlivable.

Residents struggle to afford basic necessities. Cooking gas is sold on the black market for 10 times its regular price, fuel is scarce, and frozen meat is available only at exorbitant prices despite poor health conditions. Infrastructure has collapsed, with no resources for repairs. Public transportation is unsafe, and garbage piles up in every corner of the city. Government institutions remain paralyzed, leaving education in limbo and the economy in free fall.

Many Gazans are desperate to leave, yet they are trapped. Some who once dreamed of escaping now say they would rather die in their homeland. Others anxiously await negotiations in Qatar, hoping the talks will determine Hamas’ future and bring an end to the cycle of war.

Read Ahmed Abd al-Salam’s full opinion piece to understand the daily struggles of Gazans who are left voiceless and powerless in a devastated land.
