Heavy Rains in Sudan Claim 53 Lives and Cause Widespread Damage

The death toll from severe rainfall across several Sudanese states has risen to 53, according to Sudan’s Health Ministry. The ministry’s Autumn Emergency Room reported on Saturday that the heavy rains have also resulted in 208 injuries and affected 9,777 families.

The downpours have impacted nine states, leading to the complete collapse of over 2,000 homes and partial damage to more than 4,000 others. In addition to the physical damage, health concerns have also emerged. The ministry noted that 25 new cases of acute watery diarrhea were reported on Friday, increasing the total number of cases to 192 across the states of Kassala, Khartoum, and Gezira.

Flooding is a common challenge in Sudan, particularly from June to October. In the past three years, these seasonal rains have led to significant loss of life and widespread destruction of agricultural land.
