IDF Takes Over Hamas’ Central Hub in Gaza City
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Wednesday its successful takeover of the “Elite Quarter,” a central administrative and military stronghold of Hamas in Gaza City. The area, including “Palestine Square,” has been the epicenter of Hamas’ operations within the Gaza Strip.
The operation was a collaborative effort involving the IDF’s 401st Brigade of the 162nd Division, alongside elite units like Shaldag, Shayetet 13, and the Yahalom Unit. After enduring weeks of intense combat with Hamas militants, the Israeli forces have now secured “Palestine Square” and its surrounding Rimal district. This area was crucial to Hamas, containing key command centers, the political bureau headquarters, and homes of senior officials.
Furthermore, the district was a vital node in Hamas’ extensive underground tunnel network, which included military installations within civilian infrastructures like schools and stores. The IDF’s “sweep and clear” operation uncovered direct links to other Hamas strongholds.
IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari emphasized the strategic value of this area, detailing how senior Hamas officials utilized the network for tactical movements. He also noted that the IDF operations have expanded into previously unengaged areas such as Daraj and Tuffah, adjacent to the Hamas-dominated Shejaiya. Hagari indicated that these recent victories mark the end of the IDF’s intense campaign in northern Gaza.
