Independent Journalists Battle To Preserve Rights

The current US election cycle and war between Israel and Hamas have focused long overdue attention on rights issues, none less compelling than freedoms of press and speech. If one had slept through the last decade, it might seem “normal” for massive street rallies to “punish” those aligned with any view not embraced by sponsors of the demonstration at hand. The new wrinkle: violent assaults that in the present incarnation allow perpetrators to escape punishment in an amazing reversal— or total obfuscation—of the “right to free speech.”

For those seeking clarity and truth, enter the Fourth Estate. The original decider of fact from fancy in the public realm is again called to rise to the occasion, mounting the bully-pulpit of news, features, fact-checking, explainers, and op-eds.

Nevertheless, even its course is fraught with concern: artificially generated faux news infused with a mission to convert or at least skew the field of play to satisfy and convince based on one’s affinity or policy preference for mega-wealth.

During a time of war, some of the first victims are those who try their hardest to remain based in fact and independent from influencers and partisans, those who report facts rather than agenda-driven fluff. The cost of producing quality news content is spiraling out of sight, and non-profit news organizations such as The Media Line must rely on those who value its independence and integrity in producing trustworthy news.
