International Outrage Flares Over Quran Desecration in Sweden, Denmark
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and his Pakistani counterpart, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, strongly condemned the recent desecration of the Quran in Sweden and Denmark during a phone discussion on Saturday, according to a statement on Iran’s Foreign Ministry website. They declared that such acts contradicted human dignity and rights, having offended Muslims globally.
Amir-Abdollahian suggested holding an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to convey a strong message from Islamic countries against such acts. Meanwhile, Zardari shared Pakistan’s readiness to cooperate with Iran to counter such actions and stressed the need to criminalize such acts.
These comments followed the recent burning of a Quran by a group called Danske Patrioter in Copenhagen in protest against an attack on the Swedish Embassy in Baghdad. The Foreign Ministries of Jordan and Iraq also issued statements condemning the acts, urging international action to prevent such incidents and promote peace and tolerance.
In Baghdad, security forces held back demonstrators Saturday attempting to reach the heavily fortified Green Zone, ensuring the safety of diplomatic missions following an earlier embassy attack.
